The 2007 San Francisco 49ers Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Year award presented by Kelly-Moore Paints goes to Jesse Trumbull from Santa Cruz High School.
This past Saturday, Santa Cruz beat No. 1 seed Pacific Grove High School 21-14 in the Central Coast Section championship game. The win marks the first ever CCS title for Santa Cruz High School's football program.
In his first game back from a broken collarbone injury, running back Zeke Sanders had an exceptional performance. He scored the game-winning touchdown on a 14-yard run with 3:49 left in the 4th quarter.
In addition to being named Coach of the Year, Coach Trumbull and the Santa Cruz High School football program will now receive $2,000 from the 49ers Foundation.
For more than ten years, the 49ers have taken part in the NFL's Coach of the Week program, designed to aid and promote youth football and give high school coaches the recognition they deserve. The 49ers award, the "Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week Award presented by Kelly-Moore Paints," was named after Los Gatos High School former head coach, Charlie Wedemeyer. The encouraging example that Charlie set is an inspiration not only to coaches, but to the Bay Area community as a whole.
Each week during the 2007 high school football season, the 49ers will select one football coach as the Coach of the Week winner. Each recipient receives a $1,000 donation to their school's football program from the 49ers Foundation and a $1,000 gift certificate from Kelly-Moore Paints to go towards beautifying their school. The coach will also be recognized on High School Sports Focus - KICU TV, 49ers.com, the video board at a 49ers home game, and NFLHS.com, the NFL's high school football website.
Several factors are taken into account when selecting Coach of the Week winners, including the coach's impact on his team, school and community.
At the end of the season a Coach of the Year will be selected from the ten winners. This coach receives a $2,000 donation. At the end of the regular season, all ten coaches will visit the 49ers facility to watch the last practice of the 2007 regular season, and accept their Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week Award presented by Kelly-Moore paints, which will be presented to them by Coach Nolan.
The Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize high school coaches who transform, through their hard work and dedication to you people, the best available athletes into high potential football players. The program also forges a bond between NFL teams and their community.
